Now, in 2004, we see a new addition to the Oxnard hardcore story - Vendetta. The group broke into Southern California hardcore about a year and a half ago and have created quite a stir for themselves, and most of them have yet to even graduate from high school.
raditionally, many of the "Nardcore" bands relied on that California Surfer/Skateboarder punk rock influence. These bands have always been on the faster side of things and haven't been afraid to utilize catchy melodies, and for the most part, stayed away from being overly heavy or mosh-oriented. On this EP, Vendetta gives their elder kin the middle finger. What we have here isn't the usual beach city style Oxnard is known best for, but heavy, straightforward hardcore more in the vein of Integrity or Death Threat. The guitars pack a mean punch and there is a balanced mix between mid-tempoed, two-stepping mosh parts and out and out kickbox-all-over-everyone-within-five-feet-of-you breakdowns. There's even a very Frank "Three-Gun" (Ringworm) guitar solo thrown over the ending of "Season of Truth." This is definitely not your older brother's Nardcore.
The release of this Vendetta EP is evidence that Nardcore has entered a new era in its long, colorful hardcore history. Vendetta has offered up a very respectable first effort at an age when most kids are just standing on the sidelines wishing they could be a part of it all. While they are still a little immature lyrically, this record is certainly worth a hearty investigation, and this is definitely a band that will be a force to be reckoned with in coming months.
